Tour skating tracks in Finland

Update on 18th of February, 2017 – open route information

———–
I collected some information on tour skating tracks in Finland. Only tracks that are over 1 km long and that are maintained by communities, local volunteers or operators are included here. Tracks listed here are on lakes and sea.

Most of the tracks are free, some are maintained by private companies for a small daily fee. Since conditions vary every winter and even daily, please always check the availability of tracks from local sources. The season usually starts early January and lasts until mid-March.

I tried to find information of Lahti, Vaasa, Varkaus and several other places but could not find sufficient information to add to the list. I hope the map and the list helps you to find information of possibilities for tour skating across Finland. The map shows only starting places of the routes at the moment. Notice that some of the links lead to pages found only in Finnish.

Do you have any information of the missing places or other information (routes descriptions) of those on the map/list? Please send me a note.

  1. The map is usefull when planning a roundtrip in Finland. When traveling with children one needs to make use of information about other aspects like accommondation and services.

  2. Glad to see the useful information and I plan to visit Finland in January. Linnansaari National Park is very attractive for me, but I don’t have idea how to get there without car. Is it far far away from Helsinki? Do you have some suggestions if I would like to have a tour skating trip for maybe two days? Thank you~

    1. Thanks! Oravi village where the route to Linnansaari np starts is 40km from town called Savonlinna. Savonlinna is 340km from Helsinki, see info how to get there. To get to Oravi, see Saimaa Holiday’s info. They arrange guided trips to the routes. See their journal of the last winter’s season. In January skating on the sea might not be possible so you better get to the lake area like Linnansaari.

  3. Thank you very very much! Well noted the route Helsinki – Savonlinna – Oravi.
Is it a popular place that I will meet more Finns or other places? I would like to chat and learn more culture and experience from people 🙂

    1. Hello! Oravi village is very small, only a couple of hundreds people live there. It depends on the season how many skaters you will meet, I guess the best season is February-March. Please ask Saimaa Holiday’s for more details. At least you’d see a lot of Finnish countryside there.

  4. Thank you very much for info! You know, this winter 2013 – 2014 is very warm. Do you have updated information about tracks? What about tracks near Savonlinna? Thank you in advance

  5. Thanks a lot, this map secured a great little ice skating trip for us!

Still, we haven’t find any signs of maintained tracks in Hämeenlinna, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Ylöjärvi and Kangasala (which didn’t stop us from skating at the last two). Maybe that was just bad timing: fresh snow right after holidays (Jan 7-8, 2015), just too early in the winter, I don’t know. Confirmed: great Punkaharju track; guys in Jämsä assured us that track is maintained, but that day we were there it wasn’t ready yet. Just my two cents of sharing expirience 🙂

Here are these point in GPX format for you GPS gadgets etc: https://yadi.sk/d/YrhqrljYduCKc (feel free to redistribute it as you see fit).

Thank you again for great ice skating resource!
